The Afghan Health Leadership Consortium (AHLC) unites community-based organizations, civic, and municipal agencies to serve the Afghan community throughout Alameda County and the greater Bay Area. Facilitated by Dr. Valerie Smith, Certified Health Education Specialist, the AHLC holds quarterly training meetings. Since the COVID pandemic, these virtual meetings have expanded to include participants from across the state and beyond.
The Consortium focuses on health topics specific to the Afghan community, aimed at service providers, educators, and community leaders. Following the crisis in Afghanistan, the AHLC has centered discussions on the unique needs of new arrivals. Recent topics include Refugee Resettlement, Welcoming Afghan Arrivals, and Families in Transition: Afghanistan One Year Out. At recent conferences, more than 100 professionals have regularly attended, reflecting the growing commitment to addressing Afghan community health challenges.
