Rev. Bruce Green has been a dedicated supporter of the Afghan community since 2004, when he first encountered the Afghan Coalition through an interfaith program. In 2002, Bruce founded Bridge Building, an initiative to foster greater understanding between Christians and Muslims. Through this outreach, he became involved in helping Afghans in crisis situations in Fremont, including an FBI Arrest of Afghan businessman (link) as well as other high-profile incidents covered by the media. His role as a friend to the Afghan community is featured in the Harvard University Pluralism Project documentary Fremont USA (link), where he was interviewed about the tragic 2006 murder of Alia Ansari.
Bruce has also been deeply involved with Sister Cities International (SCI), serving as chairman of the Hayward-Ghazni Sister City Committee and as a member of the Northern California board of SCI. His efforts to strengthen ties between Hayward and Ghazni led him to visit Afghanistan in 2007 and 2011. During a six-month stay in 2013, he traveled to various provincial capitals to promote new sister city partnerships. (See YouTube videos link from his 2013 visit for more details).
Affectionately known as “Mr. Bruce” by many Afghans, he has served on the Afghan Coalition’s board since 2006 and has been the board secretary since 2016. He holds an MA in Intercultural Studies and is the primary author of Islam & Christianity (link), a widely used brochure in interfaith dialogue. Bruce is passionate about building bridges of understanding and compassion and is dedicated to honoring Afghan culture, history, and values.
